5 Reasons Why You Can’t Get Organized

Struggling to get organized? Here are 5 reasons why you're probably getting in your own way and solutions of how to stop that!

Why is it so stinkin’ hard to get organized?

Most people have tons of reasons they spout for why they can’t get organized!  I’ve narrowed the laundry list down to ones that I hear most often from my clients…

Here are five reasons you can’t get organized and what to do about it:

It’s overwhelming!

When routine organizing isn’t done or there isn’t a system in place to declutter and get rid of items that are no longer used, stuff can pile up into unmanageable mountains in a hurry.  And then you get overwhelmed and don’t know where to even start.  Sound familiar?

Solution: Do you know how to eat an elephant?  One bite at a time.

Here’s the thing.  The same holds true for starting to get organized.

Break down an organizing project into smaller tasks.  Is your kitchen bursting at the seams?  Start with the counters, then move into the drawers and cabinets.

Can’t see your desk?  Clear off the top and give yourself some room to work!

The ket is just to start.  There’s no perfect place to begin and it’s most important that you get going.

You’d rather be doing something else

Wouldn’t we all?  Even I put off organizing at certain times.

But I often regret it when I have to spend more time later looking for a misplaced item.  If only the area had been organized with everything in it’s place…

Solution: Do it now!  If you wait, you’re bound to lose time and gain frustration later.  Plus, if you set it aside for later, it’ll just take you even more time to do.  So don’t put it off.  Just get at it now, lady.

It’s boring

Yes, sometimes organizing things is a snore, but that doesn’t mean the clutter is going to take care of itself and get organized without you.

Solution: Set aside time each day and just get it done.

Get in the habit of doing anything that can be done in two minutes or less right then and there instead of waiting until later.  Also, build in rewards to treat yourself for a job well done.  By the by, there’s only ever one treat I need (C-H-O-C-O-L-A-T-E).

You’re too busy to get organized

Did you know that a typical adult loses at least an hour a day to being disorganized?  That adds up to about 2 weeks a year!  Crazy town!

Solution: Reclaim that time right now!  You’re too busy to not get organized.

Spend 15 minutes a day decluttering and putting things back in their home.  If items don’t have a home, establish one.

You don’t think you’re good at organizing

Maybe you’re not, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn how to improve your skill set.

Solution:  Try changing your approach and find a way around this roadblock by committing to learning how to organize.  Stick with me and you’ll have a deeper skill set in no time!
