Confessions of a Professional Organizer

When I was choosing a title for my blog, I thought it would be good to have a title that was fun and a little cheeky too!  Life is too short not to have a little fun and be a little cheeky, am I right?  In keeping with the title, I should start off pouring out my deepest, darkest secrets and confessions, now, no?  Alrighty then, here I go!

Confession #1:  I am NOT organized ALL of the time.  When people first find out what I do for a living, the first thing I usually hear from then is “I bet your house is immaculate!”

I hate to disappoint, but it isn’t.  And it isn’t perfect because I live in real life, and that means my house does not look like it could be in a magazine.  I have a lovely home, but I share it with a husband and two boys and various critters too.  Right now we have one dog, a fish and a snail.  But the kids are begging for a kitten and we’re going to be giving in soon.  So you know what that means, right?  More stuff and more dirt to deal with!

Life keeps changing, and that means there needs to be near constant adaptation to keep up with everything and sometimes that can’t happen.  So papers pile up.  Clutter takes over my kitchen counter.

And then I get grumpy.  Because I don’t like clutter and I don’t like how it makes me feel: stuck and overwhelmed, and sometimes, it makes getting through the day seem impossible.

But the truth is that the clutter will go away just as it became to be – one item at a time and not all at once.  At this point, I usually figure out a new system that will work to keep me organized, or tweak the existing system and get things back on board.

The other reason I’m not 100% organized is because I am human.

It is impossible to be totally organized, so don’t judge your life compared to that crazy standard.

I find that people are too hard on themselves.  You cannot possibly be good at everything, and that includes having a perfectly organized home all of the time and its not necessarily going to be easy to get or stay organized either.  I don’t expect constant perfection from anyone, including myself.  So please cut yourself some slack!  If I ever have occasion to work with you, know that I won’t judge you for lack of perfection either, especially if you are a client!

This first confession was kinda fun!  Stayed tuned for more.
