Organizing Your Baking Ingredients
The task of organizing baking supplies start with getting ingredients in order.
Consumable baking supplies like flour, sugar, baking powder, cocoa all need a designated, easy-to-access home.
Here’s some smart advice for baking supply storage:
- Flour and Sugar: For large quantities, invest in airtight containers to keep ingredients fresh.
Square or rectangular containers are space-efficient, allowing you to maximize shelf space.
Label them clearly with the ingredient name.
Anyone who’s mistakenly added salt instead of sugar has been “treated” to an unforgettable ruined recipe.
Once my mom mistook pickling salt for sugar and the resulting cookies were not even close to edible.
Skip the possibility of making a similar unfortunate error by labeling ingredients that aren’t stored in their original packaging.
This set of pantry labels features both images and words to make finding the right ingredient a snap! - Small Ingredient Containers: Baking soda, baking powder, spices, and extracts can easily get lost.
My favorite cabinet storage trick for these smaller baking supplies?
A small, clear turntable (aka lazy Susan) in your pantry or upper kitchen cabinet.
This way, nothing gets pushed to the back, and a simple spin brings everything into view.
This simple solution can make a huge difference in your baking routine.
Be sure to note the date the baking powder was opened so your baked goods don’t fall flat because the powder is old.
The best practice is to use containers of baking powder within six months after opening for best results.
Organizing Baking Pans and Muffin Tins
Baking pans can be awkward and take up valuable space if they’re not stored properly.
Here’s how to organize baking pans in cabinets:
- Baking Sheets, cooling rack and cutting boards: For each of these baking supply essentials, vertical dividers are your best friend.
Whether built-in cabinet dividers or adjustable wire racks, storing them upright on their side makes them easy to grab without causing a clattering avalanche.
I store my baking sheets and cooling racks in this YouCopia cabinet organizer (see a picture of it in action further down in this post).
It’s a great choice because the sections can be adjusted to accommodate the individual items.
Some items are stored better individually (like baking sheets) while others (like cutting boards) can be grouped in the same section together.
A DIY baking pan storage solution is to use tension rods, like the ones often used to hang window treatments, to create divided sections for the baking sheets.
Use two vertically positioned per section: one at the front of cabinet and other six or so inches back.
Two tension rods per section gives more structure to the space, ensuring the baking sheets stay in their designated section and don’t splay out in the back of the cabinet.
Skinny lower cabinets are another natural storage space for cutting boards and slim baking sheets. - Round Cake Pans: Round cake pans and pie plates often nest beautifully.
Stack them by size, and consider placing a piece of felt or even a paper plate between them to prevent scratching, especially if your pans have a non-stick coating. - Muffin Tins: Muffin tins are notorious for being oddly shaped and easily fall over as a result.
Store them on their sides, either in a baking sheet organizer or using the tension rod method outlined above.

Above the Fridge Storage
Above the fridge storage is another good options in some kitchens for keeping lesser used baking pans.
I keep pie plates, loaf pans, and bundt cake pans in that space since they’re not used as often as baking sheets or muffin tins.
Organizing Cookie and Cake Decorating Supplies
Cookie and cake decorating can involve a surprising amount of tiny tools!
Smart cake supply storage involves getting everything in one place:

- Piping Tips and Bags: Keep your piping tips together.
A small tackle box or an art supply organizer with multiple compartments is perfect for keeping tips, couplers, and small spatulas organized.
This keeps your decorating tools contained and easy to find when inspiration strikes. - Cookie Cutters: Corral and organize cookie cutters together in a bin.
- Colorants: Food coloring gels can go in a small, clear bin or on that same turntable you use for other small ingredients.
Seeing all your colors at once helps spark creativity and lessens the likelihood of buying duplicates.
And keeping them in a container can keep messes at bay in case of leakages. - Sprinkles and decorations: For sprinkles, glitters, and other edible decorations, keep them in uniform containers or a dedicated clear bin.
You’ll be surprised how much you have once it’s all together and organized in the same space.

Set up a Baking Drawer
Organizing smaller items in a drawer tends to work well since they can easily get lost in a cabinet.
An established baking drawer offers multiple options for arranging the space for a custom fit for all of your smaller baking supplies.
The Best Containers for Storing Baking Supplies
The best baking supply storage containers are clear so that you never have to wonder what’s inside.
Lidded storage containers work the best so that smaller items don’t fall out.
Another advantage is that the lidded containers can be stacked to make use of the full depth of the baking supply drawer.
Containers for Baked Goods: Storage and Gifting
Once your delicious creations are baked, you’ll want to store or package them beautifully for gifting.
Here’s how to organize this type of baking supply:
- Boxes and Tins: Keep your cake boxes, cupcake carriers, and other packaging materials in one designated area.
Nest items within each other to make better use of the space.
If you have a deep shelf, use a magazine file holder to store flat boxes vertically. - Containers: For storing baked goods, invest in a collection of good quality, airtight containers. Having a variety of sizes is helpful.
Stack them efficiently with thier lids attached when not in use.
This means you’ll never be searching for the lid when it comes time to store the baked goods.

Create a Baking Zone
If you are an avid baker and have space in your kitchen, you may want to corral and organize baking supplies in one area of your kitchen.
This will make it easy to find all of your baking equipment, including non-consumable decorating supplies and baking pans in the same area of the room.
I mostly have this same set up in my kitchen.
As you can see in the above picture, almost all of my non-consumable baking supplies and baking pans live in the same cabinet, along with my collection of sprinkles.

The sprinkles, piping bags and bottles and cookie cutters live in separate tall plastic storage boxes on the top shelf.
Since small baking supplies typically aren’t heavy, the tall bins hold a lot but are easy to get down when needed.
And all of my recipe books live on the shelf right below the baking cabinet, making for a tidy baking zone.
